Dear Rachel: Three Months

Dear Rachel,

You’re three months old now. The other day I was thinking of all the things I was going to say in my monthly letter to you, but time has passed so quickly that I didn’t even realize it was time to write another one!

You are such a sweet baby. My favorite thing ever right now is when I go to get you in the morning (ok, sometimes Daddy goes to get you too, especially if Mommy is really tired). You only recently started sleeping in your crib…technically this was right after you turned 3 months, but oh well. But you did this when in the Pack ‘n Play too! You start fussing, so I come to get you and say, “Good morning!” You immediately look for me and when you see me, you start smiling. I unswaddle one arm and you stretch it UP – FREEDOM!! Then I unswaddle the other arm. MORE FREEDOM!! After that we fall into our daily routine.

If it’s a work day, then I change you and feed you, which takes about 30 minutes. After you burp (loudly), it’s time to get ready (on the weekends we get to lounge instead of all the hustle). You are happy to chill in the Rock ‘n Play while I shower and do my hair and makeup. You watch me and babble to yourself, chew on your hands, look at the lights or the dogs. And of course you give me a big smile when I solicit one!

After I’ve made your bottles and finished getting dressed, it’s time for us to hang out together until P (your nanny) arrives. I turn on Raffi on Pandora and we sing and play and drink coffee (ok, just me on that one). You’re always in a good mood.

I try to come home for lunch some days, just so I can spend another 30 minutes with you, holding and kissing you, and feeding you if it’s on your schedule. It kills me that we only get a few hours together at night. When I get home, it’s usually your cranky time. I hold you and nurse you, and then you’ll have a few smiles before it’s time for bath (which you love) and bed. During bath time you look so chubby and content; you love the warm water splashing on you! Then it’s time for nursing and rocking in your room before you pass out! You have been so good about sleeping through the night for the past few weeks (knock wood). Seriously, you can sleep 8pm-6am, which is AMAZING. I hope I am not jinxing us by saying so! And when you do wake up now, it’s just once and I will change you, feed you, and put you back in your crib. It’s bliss.

I hate leaving you. It’s gotten to this point where I’m so torn. I have things I want to do but at the same time, I don’t want to do them because I don’t want to leave you. I know I need to exercise but now I will just go to the gym after you go to bed for the night. It’s really hard for me to leave on weekend mornings, because I know I am missing several hours with you. At least your daddy gets to spend some quality time with you; he gets to see you even less than I do during the week!

You have discovered that you can touch things now; on your activity mat you will grab at the toys and of course try to put them in your mouth. AND you blow raspberries, which is so adorable I could puke. We chit chat back and forth all the time, and you blow bubbles at me and Daddy. People can’t believe how “goo goo ga ga” I am over you; I guess because they have never seen that side of me before! But who could help themselves? You’re such a delight!

I’m trying to savor all of these little moments. My newborn is in the past, and now I have a real little baby on my hands…you are wonderful.

Love,
Mommy
