It’s rough.

I have several posts I’m SUPPOSED to be writing. Like how my training went last week (surprisingly well save for the 15K that wasn’t). Like what I’ve been up to. But this post isn’t about that.

Yesterday was particularly hard. I went back to work full-time on Monday, and it’s been tough. Let’s just say I’m not working out at all because, as I predicted, I do not want to leave once I get home. I am going to force myself to run this evening but it will be tough. And I can’t get up early and work out anymore because I am too tired from waking up during the night for feedings.

Then I was in an all-day meeting yesterday and couldn’t go home for lunch (I did this even before Rachel was born, to avoid dining out and to let the dogs out!). It was rough going all day without her.

When Shane got home I was just sitting on the couch holding a sleeping baby and crying. I’m just exhausted. And yes, I know I do too much. But slowing down isn’t really an option for me. I hate feeling unproductive. “Relaxing” is not relaxing. At least last night I had a special project to work on (more on that later) and could feel like I was doing something but it was mindless and so it WAS relaxing.

Any tips from working moms on making the transition easier?

What do you do to relax?

I’m already dreading leaving her all day when grad school starts in August. But I’m excited to continue my education…it’s bittersweet really. I have no advice (sorry), but can tell you I’ll probably feel the exact same. Hang in there! You’re doing amazing!

Christa, it is rough. You are not alone. It’s hard to have a baby and go back to work like life is just the same. NOTHING is the same. And that’s ok. It will get easier. Sometimes you do have to prioritize but in general it gets easier. Be realistic with what you expect of yourself (well that went out the window since those of us training for IM are nuts anyway!) but don’t be hard on yourself. Heck having a baby is hard work even if you didn’t have another job. Relax and love her and love yourself! You will get it figured out. Don’t get down. You’re doing a great job!

When I first went back to work, I worked a full time schedule for a week, then had a week off (yay for flexible schedules), but the weeks I would work were so hard. I would cry and have wicked anxiety and was just generally a basket case. I dropped my schedule to just 3 days a week and while those 3 days are tough, it made it much easier to leave Jack. I know not everyone can drop down to a part time schedule or have the flexibility that I’m lucky to have, though. Do you have the option of working from home sometimes, or dropping down to part time work? That way you wouldn’t have to quit, but would have more time to be Mommy and do your training (assuming you kept your nanny)….
