Dear Rachel: One Month

Dear Rachel,

I can’t believe you are already one month old! Older than that really – on the 22nd you turned one month, and now you’re five weeks. Wow.

You are such an expressive baby. You stare with wide eyes at everything (ok, and sometimes with crossed eyes, but you’re getting better at focusing)! And occasionally you make this cutest face – a small “o” with your lips, sometimes before yawning but usually just on its own, like you’re saying “ooooo….” It’s adorable and my favorite.

You hate sleep, let’s put that out there. I walk you around the living room and tell you not to worry, that Daddy and I aren’t doing anything or going anywhere while you sleep, so you shouldn’t fight it. Daddy dances with you in your wrap and holds your paci in your mouth to satisfy you. That’s another thing – you are ok with the paci but it really angers you when it falls out of your mouth. I’m hoping next month you’ll learn how to keep it in there!

You got a cold a week ago and weren’t very happy. Before your doctor appointment, you and I spent all morning in bed, snuggling and nursing and sleeping. I felt really and truly bonded to you that day, holding you and letting you know that it was all going to be ok. You seemed to understand.

You still love your hands up by your face and your ankles crossed – just like you were doing in all the ultrasound photos.

We swaddle you at night so you won’t wake yourself up with your hands. You kinda don’t like the process but it helps you sleep. Now you are in a more predictable sleeping pattern, so I’m getting my sanity back. Sorry for yelling a few times. And for the f-bombs. Mommy didn’t mean it.

Your furry brothers aren’t terribly interested in you yet (I have a feeling this will change only once you start eating food/dropping it on the floor). They mostly just sniff you and occasionally lick your head or hands. Today was the first day you acknowledged Charlie licking your head, by scowling at him. You scowl a LOT. I guess Mommy passed on her Bitchy Resting Face. That and my chicken legs. Sorry.

So right now all you do really is nurse, stare, cry, sleep, and of course pee and poop. We have started using cloth diapers and that is going pretty well – and you are quick to let us know when you want to be changed! You’re not a fan of diaper changes, I guess since you’re cold – and for that matter, you don’t like bath time either!

You love going on walks though – it really soothes you and you just stare the whole time. I can’t wait to go running with you!! One more week! You also really love the car and were great on the rides to and from Nana and Poppy’s house.

I feel more bonded with you every day and just love you so much. Daddy and I both do.

You and me, just chillin this afternoon.  I say your cloth diaper makes you look like Tweedle Dum – so bottom heavy!

This blog is great for keeping track of memories. One moments worst experience will be only be a shadow of a memory. I think the early months are the hardest! Hang in there….and for the record they forgive the f bombs. You crack me up! Have a great 2014!

How was she so past due? She is such a little twig still. =) Rach, did you get the memo on overdue babies being chubbers?? Guess not.

Hope I get to see you and meet Rach soon!

Why do babies fight sleep SO MUCH?!? Are they out to get us??? That’s my theory.
