As I mentioned, I’ll be participating in the Be the Match 5K on 9/14! Be the Match is a campaign for the National Marrow Donor Program. Through Be the Match, you can register to become a bone marrow donor and potentially a life saver for people with life-threatening blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma!
These days, bone marrow donation is easier than ever. Now you can donate your stem cells – blood is taken out of your arm, the blood-creating cells are separated from your blood through a filtration system, and then the blood goes back into another arm. How could it get any simpler to save a life?! Visit here if you want more information on bone marrow/stem cell donation.
I hope you decide to join the bone marrow registry. It’s soooo easy. You sign up, they send you a packet, you swab the insides of your cheeks, and mail it back. THAT’S IT.
Here’s the sad part – out of everyone who registers to donate, only about half of those people fulfill their commitment when called upon Please only register if you are truly committed to donating bone marrow or stem cells to a match.
OR you can register at your local Be the Match Walk + Run. For the rest of the year, it’s going down in the following cities:
St. Louis – September 7th, 2013
HOUSTON - September 14th, 2013
Charlotte – September 28th, 2013
Phoenix – October 26th, 2013
Long Beach – November 16th, 2013
And here’s something fun – I’m going to sign somebody up! That’s right, you can WIN an entry here and now. As always I will use a random number generator to determine the winner. Contest ends on FRIDAY 8/30 AT NOON! So if you live near one of these places, all you have to do to enter is leave a comment below answering the following:
Which city do you plan to run/walk in?
Optional (no bonus entries): Are you a registered bone marrow donor?
