On a lighter note…

A few people have asked what kind of gear I like for training and racing.  Well, here it is!  A pretty all-encompassing list:

SWIM:

I now use old race swim caps, but before I even did a race I was swimmin’ and needed something to use - Cheap Speedo swim caps.

AquaSphere goggles – THE BEST!  Get em in clear or tinted (I prefer tinted for open water – sun gets in the eyes!).

Basic TYR swimsuit.

BIKE:

Pearl Izumi Sugar Shorts – they are shorter and cuter than regular cycling shorts!  I’m sporting them in most of the recent pics.

Cycling jersey – you can buy these from a cycling store in your area.  I like sleeveless ones for the summer!

Pearl Izumi (can you tell I love it?) Tri-Fly shoes – one single strap, easy for transitioning.  To be worn without socks, super comfy!

RUN:

I love Oiselle distance shorts – so comfortable and with a big zippered pocket on the butt. I have them in graphite, poppy, and black!  BUT I am also loyal to my Nike shorts – they are a little longer and roomier.

I’ll train in whatever race tech shirt I have on hand (some of them are getting a bit small).  You can’t go wrong with an Oiselle Winona or Shimmel tank and be sure to check out just simple cheap singlets for the summer – lightweight is key!

For shoes, I’m an Asics girl.  I use Gel-Nimbus for long runs and training, and also like the Speedstars for shorter races.  Be sure to get fitted at a running store to find the best shoe for you, though!

nimbusNow for sprint and Olympic distance races, I use these pink Zoot slip-ons.  Makes for a super quick transition!

RACE:

Also for races, you will want to wear a tri kit.  Here’s a super cute one that Jess wears sometimes (I love it, can we be twinsies Jess??) – the top and the bottom.  I usually wear TNT or SBS – or TNT SBS!

Oceanside Finish

You’ll want a couple of other accessories too – definitely a race belt – don’t wanna be safety pinning your number in T2!

Bike helmet that I use.  And for rides AND races I use my aero bottle system – easy!  Speaking of hydration, for training and long races, I rock a Nathan handheld.  Need that agua!

And YOU MUST have SweatyBands (I think I have about 20 now) – keeps the hair back!

Thanks for doing this series! I’m training for my first triathlon and am finding out new things every day! I didn’t even think of rules for the bike portion!

Thanks for all the info… I’ve read so many different tips from other blogs and watched a million YouTube videos for my first upcoming Tri Sprint TOMORROW, but none sum it up so easily as yours. Thanks for all the tips with the bike rules – I thought transitions made me nervous. Wish me luck! :)
