This past week (going back to last weekend) was busy but very fun. My mom somehow convinced me to go to Shreveport, LA (aka Trashy Vegas) and gamble at Horseshoe Casino and see (dum da dum!!!) Bill Cosby. I love Bill Cosby. I saw him live when I was a sophomore in college but got hit in the face with a sinus infection DURING the show and was all but forcing my friend to leave. So I figured it’d be nice to get a mulligan on that one. I propositioned Aimee with a weekend of debauchery and she accepted – score.
On the way to Shreveport, flat tire. We pulled over, got the spare out, got the jack out, and stared at each other for a couple of minutes. My dad’s helpful advice? “You got an owner’s manual, dontcha?!” A very nice man stopped to help us – he owned a car repair business and had air tools on his truck! Got the tire changed in about 12 minutes and refused to accept payment. True good Samaritan. Aimee said that we must have really good karma; I agree. It would have taken us all damn day to change that tire, and one of us would have definitely lost a limb. So first stop in Shreveport was Sears to get a new tire. We made it to Horseshoe with just enough time to see Bill!
I just googled to find a picture of him wearing the sweatshirt that says Hello, Friend – he wore it to the other show I saw, so I assume it’s his standard. Look what I found when I googled. That makes me tear up. He’s still got it though. Good clean humor and a great time. Oh, Dr. Huxtable.
Followed by buffet (COTTON CANDY), drinks, gambling til 2am (YES, we did), and an ass dial wake up call from “Carl Hutchins”….goddamnit, Carl (on the way there, I introduced Aimee to Leroy Jenkins, a phenomenon that is newly hilarious to me). It was a great time, and the drive back was only 3.5 hours (no flats!).
Cotton candy evidence…
Rest of the past week – DYNAMO game (lots of fun), a couple runs (one in pouring rain which resulted in a beautiful DOUBLE RAINBOW – photo credit to my friend Claudia)…
8 mile run on Saturday, plus a tour at HMH, and whiffle ball with some friends at Hermann Park. Shane would like everyone to know that he scored a run and I did not. Ouch.
Today was 44 miles (or 48, in case you don’t remember where you parked like me) at the Katy Flatlands ride – with Shea, Jess, Misty, Julie, and Marisa. Lots of fun, good rest stops – love sponsored rides – and worth the 4:45am wakeup…THAT’S RIGHT.
Julie caught a pretty good picture of me wandering around the parking lot. MARCO?!
Just enough time to make it home, shower, and head to the movies to see The Dark Knight Rises (in D-box!). I had bought the tickets before the shooting and I will say that I wasn’t sure if we should skip or not…would it be disrespectful? My heart has really ached for the loss of innocent people, and to be honest the tragedy shook me a little – some people are psychos, and you never know who they are, where they’ll be, or what they’ll want to do. It was especially disturbing during the first scene that was wrought with gunfire, since that was supposedly the scene when the shooting started. Quite frankly, I can’t say anything poignant enough about the situation other than that we should all keep the people of Aurora in our thoughts. They were family members – brothers and sisters and moms and dads and sons and daughters, and our country mourns their loss at the hands of a terrorist committing a senseless, violent act.
On that note….hopefully this week will bring some new hope and some justice.
